BYZANTINE
The term “Byzantine” derives from Byzantium, which is an ancient Greek colony founded by a man named Byzas. The Byzantine Empire was built between the 4th and the 5th century. The empire survived for 1,000 more years, spawning a rich tradition of art, literature and learning and serving as a military buffer between the states of Europe and the threat of invasion from Asia.
RENAISSANCE
Renaissance was a time of great social and cultural change in Europe. The Renaissance spanned from the 14th to the 16th centuries, spreading across Europe from its birthplace in Italy.
The term 'renaissance' is derived from the French word meaning 'rebirth'. It is used to describe this phase of European history because many of the changes experienced between the 14th and 16th centuries were inspired by a revival of the classical art and intellect of Ancient Greece and Rome.
MADAME GRÈS &
VALENTINO GARAVANI
Madame Grès was known for using delicate pleats, drapery and feminine. She also introduced the idea of cutouts, creating little windows in her gowns, which revealed the back or shoulder. I love how these cutouts can be found at unique areas to show a little of flesh but not too much.
Valentino Garavani’s dresses are dreamier, more romantic, more youthful and impeccably made. Valentino explains that a dress should have very little detail and notes that he is focusing his design energy on creating a perfect bias cut.
